Join us for this special 90-minute walking tour as we pay tribute to Georgina Beyer (1957–2023), visiting locations around central Wellington that shaped her journey. Along the way, we will honour some of her heroes and listen to first-hand archival audio clips that showcase her humour and resilience.
Born in Wellington, Georgina went on to have an unprecedented local, national, and international impact through her commitment to equality and her belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential in society.
Elected Mayor of Carterton District in 1995 and later to Parliament in 1999, Georgina became the world’s first openly transgender mayor and Member of Parliament.
In 2004, she famously confronted members of Destiny Church during the Enough Is Enough rally on the grounds of Parliament. Never a bystander, Georgina faced down their bigotry, telling them plainly, “Your hatred is totally intolerable.” This was just one of many defining moments in her extraordinary life.
Georgina’s story is defiantly optimistic, confronting hardship and using lived experience to change the world for the better.
