An update on the HRRT case now it’s closed
Our time in the Human Rights Review Tribunal finally finished yesterday. This has been a long four and a half years in the making, and a long time spent in court too, with around 40 witnesses called.
We never expected to go to court over our right to hold an event where trans*, non-binary, intersex, and all gender minority attendees would feel safe, accepted, and supported to be themselves by everyone at Out in the City. But we will always fight for the most vulnerable members of our community. And we want to thank everyone who stood with us.
From our amazing pro bono legal team (Simpson Grierson, Victoria Casey KC and numerous other barristers), to our witnesses who willingly gave their time and expertise, to our supporters who sat through some pretty gruelling court sessions and everyone who donated to our Givealittle fund that paid for witness flights, coffees and manaakitanga - thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We'd especially like to thank our former board chair Tasmin Prichard, who has been involved in this case from the beginning. We didn't choose this fight, but it was an honour to be able to represent our community. Thank you for putting your trust in us.
We await the decision of the Tribunal, and will have more information for you soon.
