As We Do - A Play Reading

  • BATS theatre Kent Terrace Wellington, Wellington Region, 6011 New Zealand (map)
Two stick men in the flax

As We Do by Ronald Trifero Nelson is set in the summer of 1987 in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, just after the passage of Homosexual Law Reform. This staged reading, performed by professional actors, follows Sam, a recent Victoria University graduate, and Trevor, a day labourer, as they move through the secret, analogue world of gay cruising in parks and public toilets. As Sam anxiously waits for his HIV test results, Trevor lives moment to moment. The play offers frank, often funny conversations about sex, desire, risk, and survival—capturing the thrill, danger, and fleeting joy of a queer world on the edge of change.

This staged reading invites audiences into the development of a new play. Post-show discussions with the playwright, director, and actors create a welcoming space for the queer community to share responses and insights. This feedback will directly inform the script as it continues toward a fully realised production later this year
