Meet the artists: Jamie Renee
We recently launched a series of new merch for sale, as collaborations between the Wellington Pride Festival and local queer artists. We’d like to introduce you to the artists behind the shirts. Third in our series is Jamie Renee (she/her)!
Tell me about yourself - what should people know about you?
Hi everyone! I’ve been an artist for over 25 years and a Tattoo artist for 6. I absolutely love pop culture, niche references and mixing beautiful with absurdly silly. I originally got my degree in VCD at Massey here in Wellington and found my way to tattooing in 2019. I am super passionate about tattooing and the way it gives my clients happiness, confidence and sometimes closure. Being a part of people’s lives and experiences in such a personal way is always very humbling and I’m very lucky to have the clients that I do.
Can you tell me about your design? Does it require much of a brain shift to move between print and tattoo work?
I’m a big fan of Simpsons references and I used the gist of ‘Mr Sparkle’ for this one. I knew as soon as I was asked to do this, I wanted to do a camp, Cowboy frog. I just needed the overall direction, and here we are!
Sometimes it can be a bit of a brain shift, mostly in terms of digital illustration. I follow the same process whenever I design tattoos so anything can be changed if the client wishes, so not needing to do that can always catch me out. Same goes for creating stencil layers!
Why is WPF important to you?
I think it’s super important that the queer community feels supported, safe and loved here in Wellington, obviously not exclusive to any location or group! I’ve done a few Queer charity events in the past and I’m always happy to create and celebrate with my community. It was a huge honour to be asked to participate in this.
What other queer media or art have you been enjoying lately?
You can catch me listening to The Bald & The Beautiful podcast with Trixie & Katya. If you ever see me in person, ask to see my Trixie & Katya tattoo by Amanda Toner. I also absolutely love the music of Orville Peck, can you tell I love me a cowboy?
If people want to see or buy more from you, where can they go?
You can find me up at Dr Morse Tattoo Studio here in Wellington. If you’re keen to book in a consult or tattoo with me, the best way to do so is to email me directly jamiereneetattoo@gmail.com. You can also find my prints and stickers up at the studio if you want something a little less permanent.
