Useful information about tomorrow’s Hīkoi and Out in the City

Tomorrow Wellington Pride Festival’s largest event is happening. Out in the City celebrates exactly forty years since the first Gay & Lesbian Fair for a Fair Law happened in Newtown. We’re incredibly excited about everything we’ve got lined up to take place. But it’s a big day, so we want to make sure you’re comfortable!.

Pride Hīkoi

The Pride Hīkoi is assembling in Te Ngākau Civic Square at 9am. From there, we’ll march over the bridge to Odlins Plaza - approximately a 5-10 minute walk. There is a wheelchair accessible route. We’ll have marshals along to help out - spot our volunteers in pink hi vis vests, or Festival committee in purple.

Out in the City

Datacom Stage

If you’re not joining us for the hīkoi first, Out in the City begins at 10am, with song and some words from Des Smith, one of the founders of the first Gay & Lesbian Fair. The full timetable for the Datacom Stage and performer profiles are available on our website.

If you would like to leave a tip for our performers, you can do that via our Givealittle, or in cash at our caravan.

Pooches in the Plaza

One particular highlight will be Pooches in the Plaza where we’ll look for the best groomed dog, the closest dog/human lookalike and the best dog trick. Registration for Pooches in the Plaza has closed now as it’s been tremendously popular, but your well trained dogs are welcome at Out in the City anyway, on leashes and if you pick up after them,

Stalls

Most stalls have eftpos or will take bank transfer. Please support these small queer businesses! Make sure you have a chat to some of the other organisations too - there’s health services, clubs and other opportunities for you to volunteer.

Do stop by the Pride Parade/Pride Festival joint stall to have your say on what you’d like to see more (or less) of in Pride 2027, and find out other ways to get involved.

Find a list of all the stalls and a map you can print out yourself on our website.

Look after yourself

Please note that Out in the City is amazingly fun, but it’s also a loud, crowded day. Thanks to 2 degrees, Zeal will be providing a chillout zone, and you can also enjoy the wider waterfront area if you need some time out.

Make sure you’re wearing sunscreen, staying hydrated and bring a hat.

Have any issues during the day? Speak to one of our volunteers in the pink high vis vests, the Festival committee in the purple vests, or come see us in the caravan.

YAY LET’S CELEBRATE TOGETHER HURRAY!

Oh, and two quick reminders

  1. Don’t forget to get your ticket to Out in Brewtown (remember that you can buy a ticket that includes bus transport to make life super easy)

  2. Voting for your favourite Rainbow Window of Wellington is now open. Make sure you’ve checked out plenty of them before you decide though, because you only get one vote!
